About Us

The Marine Metre Squared (Mm2) project has been developed by the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre, Department of Marine Science, University of Otago and is supported by the Ministry for the Environment – Community Environment Fund.

The aim of the project is to encourage communities to get involved in long-term monitoring of the seashore, to raise awareness of biodiversity and changes in the marine environment, and build links between scientists, educators, schools and community/iwi groups who care about the seashore environment and want to look after it. We welcome participation from individuals, community groups and schools – anyone with an interest in the NZ seashore.

The Mm2 Project Advisory Board consists of marine scientists, educators, teachers, conservationists, iwi groups and representatives from local and regional councils.

The University of Otago's New Zealand Marine Studies Centre provides expert knowledge and education about New Zealand's marine environment. The educational programmes involve students in the excitement of scientific discovery, develop knowledge and skills and encourage individuals to take responsibility and action for the future of our ocean resource. Contact the NZ Marine Studies Centre for further information about the range of educational programmes and resources available for schools and interest groups (email us at marine-studies@otago.ac.nz or see our website: www.marine.ac.nz).
